Hospice is a special concept of care designed to provide comfort and support to patients and their families when a life-limiting illness no longer responds to cure-oriented treatments. Hospice views dying as a normal, natural process and does not seek to hasten or postpone death. The belief is that the end of life can be a peaceful, positive, and meaningful experience both for the patient and for their loved ones.
The hospice approach is carried out by a team-oriented group of professionals who specialize in addressing all aspects of a terminal illness. The team focuses on each patient as an individual and develops a plan of care specific to that patient's needs. A special emphasis is placed on pain management to ensure that patients remain comfortable and free from worry.
Also, as it does for the patient, hospice also cares for the emotional, social, and spiritual needs of the patient's family and friends. A variety of counseling and bereavement services are available before and even after a loved one has passed away.
